125 Ways to Find Friends and Funds

by Ann Fitzgerald

In order to raise money, fundraisers must identify individuals, foundations and corporations that have the ability and inclination to give.  Then, they must build relationships with the donors based on trust and shared interests.
Here are a few ways to find and cultivate potential donors to your organization:
  1. Profile your current donors. Determine who gives to you and why. Gauge which outreach techniques are most successful in attracting donors.
  2. Research local philanthropists who support universities and hospitals in your area.
  3. Identify your state’s corporate foundations at the Grantsmanship Center (www.tgci.com).
  4. Contact alumni of your programs, former staff or others affiliated in some way with your organization.
  5. Ask top donors for referrals or ask them to identify friends from a list of prospects.
  6. Rent email lists from nonprofits with similar missions. Or ask a group to promote your organization by sending an email to their lists.
  7. Host a conference call with your major donors to update them on your work.
  8. Ask a board member to send a hand-written letter of thanks.
  9. Invite a donor to give a benediction or lead the Pledge of Allegiance at an event.
  10. Ask donors to speak to your staff about their work and their philanthropy.
