Worthwhile Web Sites

The Internet offers a multitude of free resources for fundraisers. We have compiled a list of some of the sites we use regularly for general information on philanthropy, funding sources, board development, nonprofit management and prospect research.

Do you have some favorite sites? Please email them to us and we’ll include them in a future edition of the Non-Profit Partner.

Nonprofit Databases

www.irs.gov/charities/index.html

Offers a variety of resources for nonprofits as well as links to state government web sites.

http://nccs.urban.org

The National Center for Charitable Statistics at the Urban Institute is the national clearinghouse of data on the nonprofit sector in the U.S.

Funding Sources

http://www.foundationcenter.org/

Maintains a searchable database of U.S grantmaking foundations.

http://www.guidestar.org/

Web database of all IRS-registered charitable nonprofits and articles about fundraising and legal issues.

http://tgci.com

The Grantsmanship Center provides useful resources, especially though their “Funding Sources” tab.

Rating Charities

Some fundraisers may not agree with the criteria these sites use in rating charities. Nonetheless, it is important to be aware of them because your donors are probably using these sites.

http://www.give.org/

The Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance reports on nationally soliciting charitable organizations that are the subject of donor inquiries. These reports include an evaluation of the subject charity in relation to the voluntary BBB charity standards.

www.charitywatch.org

www.charitynavigator.org

Both sites rate charities based on efficiency and financial health.

Board Development

http://www.boardsource.org/

Good source for resources on effective nonprofit governance.

http://www.compasspoint.org/

Publishes lots of useful information for boards and staffs.

Nonprofit Management

Contains many practical tools for nonprofit managers.

http://www.managementhelp.org/

Periodicals

www.nonprofitquarterly.org

The Nonprofit Quarterly from the Boston-based Third Sector New England publishes commentary by today’s nonprofit leaders.

http://www.philanthropy.com/

This is the web site for the major newspaper focusing on the nonprofit sector, The Chronicle of Philanthropy.  The site also sponsors http://philanthropy.com/giveandtake/, a round-up of selections from philanthropy and nonprofit blogs.

http://www.nptimes.com/

The Nonprofit Times is another useful newspaper that focuses primarily on the fundraising needs of nonprofits.

www.idealist.org

Prospect Research

www.theultimates.com

Zabasearch.com

Zoominfo.com

These three free sites search through phone books, email directories, and trip planners all over the web. They are useful sites to find contact information for an individual donor.

www.forbes.com

Includes searchable databases of Forbes Most Wealthy, Forbes 400, 800 American CEOs, and executives affiliated with publicly traded corporations. This is a particularly helpful source for corporate bios.

www.opensecrets.org and www.fec.gov

Search political contributions made by individuals or companies. Searches often produce the occupation or employer with which the individual is affiliated.

http://finance.yahoo.com

A user-friendly gateway to basic information about a company’s history, stock price and financial status. This is particularly useful if you have a prospect who runs a big public company or who owns a lot of stock.

www.hoovers.com

A gateway to corporate information including SEC documents; some information is free, some can only be accessed via subscription

http://www.sec.gov/

The site of the Securities and Exchange Commission is a bit more difficult to navigate but you can find the salaries of the top officers of a public company at this government site.
