TITLE: Major Gifts Officer

REPORTS TO: President

JOB SUMMARY: A Washington, DC tax policy/advocacy organization seeks a Major Gifts Officer. He/she will help establish specific financial goals, develop long-term philanthropic relationships with high dollar donors, solicit individual donations in telephone and face-to-face meetings, oversee foundation outreach, enhance the Board’s involvement in fundraising and coordinate strategic steps to help the organization reach its financial goals. The organization operates both c3 and c6 entities.

JOB DUTIES:

Donor Solicitation

  • Solicit major gifts in one-on-one meetings or phone calls with donors.
  • Collaborate with President in identifying, managing, and cultivating individual prospects and donors.
  • Work with President to develop, manage, and execute detailed development plans for each Board Member.

Donor Relations

  • Maintain an active list of contacts for cultivation and solicitation. 
  • Work with the President to establish financial goals for high dollar donors. 
  • Regularly communicate with donors through phone calls, letters and emails. 
  • Arrange meetings with donors and prospects for cultivation and solicitation. 
  • Develop donor caseload responsibilities and coordinate with President to help prioritize his key donors. 
  • Oversee outreach to foundation donors and prospects. 

Communications

  • Collaborate with other team members for the production of donor marketing materials including newsletters, e-mails, quarterly reports, website content, etc.

Development Systems

  • Help President establish annual and five-year numerical goals, including number of donors by category, dollars raised, number of donor meetings, etc.
  • Review systems regarding key functions, such as gift processing and thank-you letters, database management, donor research, and production of internal and external reports and analyses supporting these functions.
  • Prepare regular status reports on budget projections, proposals pending, and cultivation process.
  • Coordinate regular fundraising meetings with President, staff and outside consultants as applicable. 

 

SKILL FACTORS:

Education: BS/BA or Equivalent Experience

Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in direct major gift solicitation

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Special Skills/Requirements:

  • A commitment to the liberty movement and a limited role for government.
  • The ability to plan, organize and prioritize in order to meet schedules and timelines in a fast past office where priorities can shift quickly.
  • Results-oriented with a bias for action. Must be able to take initiative and follow through with minimal supervision.
  • The skill to analyze situations and facilitate appropriate actions and responses.
  • Highly developed communication skills including strong writing skills; ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission and specific program-related objectives.
  • Good judgment and maturity.
  • The ability to travel 25% of the time.
