Help! I Feel Invisible in my Remote Office!
Sarah Ferguson, Senior Vice President of Client Services
We’ve all heard the famous saying: “Out of sight, out of mind.” For many of us who work in a virtual environment, this may feel like our reality, especially when we are the only one (or one of the very few) working from home.
It can be difficult to navigate the communication lines, especially when barriers are frequent and unintentional. This is one of the greatest challenges – or rather, opportunities – for remote employees.
So, how do we virtual warriors stay on the frontlines in our efforts when it feels like no one can see or hear us?
1) Stay visible – Encourage video conference meetings as much as possible. Don’t be afraid to turn on your camera and share your home workspace with colleagues. Of course, always look presentable – even if you have on pajama pants, be cognizant of what others see on the camera.
2) Say something – Contribute to the conversation even if it doesn’t seem that important. When you’re remote, it’s easy for colleagues to overlook you and your interests. In the virtual workforce, you are your only advocate, so speak up. If everyone is saying hello and talking about their weekend, pipe in and share about yours. Or if they launch a new product or project, ask questions. If you hear side comments, ask what they are talking about. Stay front and center as much as possible and always say something.
3) Follow up with an email – After each relevant meeting, follow up the call with copies of your notes or questions about the conversation. Doing this shows colleagues that you really pay attention to what everyone is saying – whether inside or outside the building.
No matter where you are, others will see you if you let them. Being and staying invisible is often a choice in the virtual workforce, so choose to be seen and heard!
